How to Cancel a Vinted Order (For Buyers and Sellers)

Seller Profit

Cancelling a Vinted order isn't always straightforward. The rules differ depending on whether you're the buyer or the seller, whether the label has been printed, and whether the item has already been posted. Get this wrong and you can end up in a dispute, a delayed refund, or a disagreement with the other party.

Here's everything you need to know about how cancellations work on Vinted.

Can You Cancel a Vinted Order?

Yes - but with conditions. Vinted allows cancellations, but the timing matters a lot. There are essentially three windows you need to understand:

  1. Before the seller prints the shipping label
  2. After the label is printed but before the item is posted
  3. After the item has been posted or delivered

Each of these works differently for buyers and sellers.

Cancelling Before the Label Is Printed

This is the simplest scenario and the easiest time to cancel on either side.

For Buyers: The 2-Hour Window

As a buyer, you have a short window to cancel an order yourself without needing the seller's involvement. This window is typically around 2 hours after purchase. Within this period, you can cancel through the app by:

  1. Going to your purchases
  2. Opening the relevant order
  3. Tapping Cancel order (this option only appears while you're within the cancellation window)
  4. Confirming the cancellation

If you cancel within this window, the order is cancelled automatically and you receive a full refund. The seller is notified but doesn't need to take any action.

After this 2-hour window closes, you can no longer cancel unilaterally as a buyer. You'll need to contact the seller and ask them to agree to cancel.

Requesting a Cancellation from the Seller

If you've missed the 2-hour window but the seller hasn't printed the label yet, you can message the seller through the Vinted chat to ask them to cancel the order. This is a mutual agreement - the seller has to agree.

To cancel an order as a seller, or to agree to a buyer's cancellation request:

  1. Go to your sales
  2. Open the relevant order
  3. Tap Cancel order or look for the option within the order management screen
  4. Select a reason and confirm

Once the seller agrees and cancels, the buyer receives a full refund. The process is usually quick.

As a seller, are you obligated to agree? Technically, no - but most sellers will agree to a reasonable cancellation request if the label hasn't been printed. Refusing a cancellation when you haven't even posted the item yet tends to create more hassle than simply agreeing and relisting.

Cancelling After the Label Is Printed

Once the shipping label has been printed, things get more complicated. The label represents a cost that's already been incurred, and the transaction is at a more advanced stage.

If the Item Hasn't Been Dropped Off Yet

If you (as a seller) have printed the label but haven't yet dropped the parcel off with the carrier, cancellation is still possible but requires both parties to agree. The process is the same - both buyer and seller need to consent to the cancellation through the app.

If you cancel at this stage, the label is voided and cannot be used. You may need to contact Vinted support if there are any issues with the label cost.

If the Item Has Been Dropped Off

Once the parcel has been scanned in at a drop-off point and is in the carrier's network, cancellation in the traditional sense is no longer possible. The parcel is on its way.

If the buyer no longer wants the item at this point, they have to wait for it to arrive and then deal with it as a return dispute rather than a cancellation. See the section below on what happens after delivery.

What Happens If a Buyer Wants to Cancel After Delivery?

This is where things get tricky. Vinted is not a traditional retailer, and buyers do not have an automatic right to return an item simply because they've changed their mind. This surprises some people who are used to shopping on mainstream retail sites.

Change of mind is not covered by buyer protection. If a buyer receives an item exactly as described and simply decides they don't want it, they are not entitled to a refund through Vinted's dispute system.

However, if the item is:

  • Significantly not as described
  • Damaged in a way not mentioned in the listing
  • Not delivered at all

...then the buyer can raise a dispute through Vinted's buyer protection process. This is not a cancellation - it's a formal dispute, and Vinted will investigate and adjudicate.

If a buyer contacts you asking to return an item because they've changed their mind, you are within your rights to decline. Some sellers choose to accept goodwill returns to maintain positive reviews, but that's a personal decision rather than an obligation.

How the Refund Process Works

When a cancellation is agreed and processed through Vinted:

  • The buyer receives a full refund including the item price, postage, and buyer protection fee
  • The refund is returned to the original payment method
  • Refund timing depends on the payment method - card refunds typically take 3 to 5 business days to appear, PayPal refunds can be faster

Refunds only work this smoothly when the cancellation goes through the proper Vinted channel in the app. If you try to handle things outside the app - transferring money directly, for example - you lose Vinted's protection and make things much more complicated.

Seller's Rights When a Buyer Wants to Cancel

As a seller, it's worth understanding where you stand.

You don't have to agree to a cancellation request. Once the 2-hour buyer cancellation window has passed, any cancellation requires your agreement. If you've already packed the item and have it ready to post, or if you've printed the label, you're entitled to decline and proceed with the transaction.

That said, if a buyer is insisting on cancelling and you refuse, you may end up with a dispute on your hands. If the buyer leaves a negative review, you can respond to it. Use your judgement about what's more hassle in any given situation.

If a buyer raises a fraudulent dispute after delivery, respond through the app with your evidence - photos of the item before posting, your original listing, tracking information showing delivery. Vinted does investigate both sides and won't automatically rule in favour of the buyer.

Protect yourself by keeping evidence. Get into the habit of photographing items before you package them, particularly any higher-value sales. This gives you something to point to if a dispute arises.

Tips for Avoiding Cancellations as a Seller

Prevention is better than cure. Here's what I do to minimise cancellation requests.

Write accurate descriptions. Most "not as described" disputes and cancellation requests stem from buyers feeling misled. If your listing describes the item honestly - including any flaws - buyers know what they're getting.

Use good photos. Show the item from multiple angles and photograph any wear or damage clearly. This sets expectations correctly before anyone buys.

Price realistically. Overpriced items sometimes attract impulsive buyers who then regret the purchase. Pricing in line with the market means buyers are more committed to their decision.

Respond quickly to pre-purchase questions. If a buyer messages to ask about sizing or condition and you respond promptly with accurate information, they're much less likely to regret the purchase after the fact.

Post promptly. Once a sale is made, post within the expected timeframe. Delays make buyers anxious and more likely to want to cancel.

Common Cancellation Questions

Can a seller cancel an order? Yes, sellers can cancel orders too - particularly useful if you realise you've listed an item you can't actually find, or if there was a pricing error. Go to the order in your sales and look for the cancellation option.

What happens to my Vinted balance if an order is cancelled? If funds have already been released to your wallet (which happens after the buyer confirms receipt or after a set period), a cancellation at that point would need to be handled by Vinted support.

Can I cancel if the parcel is lost? A lost parcel is handled as a dispute rather than a cancellation. The buyer raises an issue, Vinted investigates using tracking data, and if the parcel is confirmed lost, a refund is issued under buyer protection.

Does cancelling affect my seller reputation? Occasional cancellations are normal and don't significantly affect your standing. If you develop a pattern of cancellations - particularly if you're cancelling because items you've sold are unavailable - Vinted may take notice.

Understanding how cancellations work on both sides of a transaction saves a lot of confusion and frustration. The key is acting quickly when issues arise and using the in-app tools rather than trying to handle things informally.
